🐸 Rare Light Blue Frog Now on Display at Umitamago Aquarium

A rare light blue Japanese tree frog, believed to occur in only about 1 in 100,000 frogs, is now on display at Umitamago Aquarium in Oita City. The frog was discovered in Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture, in June 2026 and has been on display at Umitamago since August 7. Japanese tree frogs normally have yellow, blue, and iridescent pigments that create their usual green appearance. This particular frog lacks the yellow pigment, giving it its unusual light blue color. Visitors have been surprised by the rare sight, with one saying it was the first time they had ever seen a light blue frog. Aquarium staff say the frog’s color could gradually become greener depending on its environment.
